Start Your Own Bottled Water Business

bottled-waterThe bottled water business is a billion dollar industry: 11 billion dollars to be precise.  Bottled water outsells soda, juice and most other bottled beverages on the market today.  You can have a piece of the industry pie too if you start your own bottled water business.

A bottled water business isn’t as complicated as it may sound.  It doesn’t even require a great deal of space (certainly not a whole factory’s worth).  Almost anyone can do it with the right equipment and a little bit of marketing savvy.

To start your own bottled water business, you’ll have to invest in equipment, including:

1) A water purifier: The most common method for purifying water is reverse osmosis.  Used reverse osmosis equipment can be purchased relatively inexpensively, usually for under $500, and sometimes for $250 or less.

2) A beverage bottler: Again, this equipment can often be purchased used for just a few hundred dollars or less.  This equipment fills and seals the containers.

3) Bottles: You’ll need to start out with a good supply of containers.  Purchase in bulk for the best possible price.  This cost can be passed on to your customers.

Of course, you’ll also need a reliable water source.  Tap water is the least expensive source.

Many bottled water consumers, though, prefer water sources such as natural springs.  If you have access to a natural spring this can be an excellent selling point for your product.  Even if you have to charge a little bit more, consumers are usually happy to pay for water that comes from a natural source.

Next, develop a marketing plan.  Where will you sell your product?  You may need to pursue distribution deals with local stores when you first start out.  Other marketing options include providing private label bottled water for local schools, athletic teams and fundraisers.

Your marketing plan should also include your “spin”.  In other words, what is about your product that should compel people to buy it?  As we’ve already mentioned, water from a natural source like a mountain spring is always in demand and can be a perfect selling point.

Consumers may also like the idea of purchasing a product that was bottled locally (rather than a national brand that was bottled in another city or state).  In this case, you’ll probably have success distributing your bottled water in stores within your city and area.

Finally, make sure that you know what the rules are in your area regarding the production and sales of food products.  This will help ensure the health and safety of your customers, as well as the success of your bottled water business.

Celebrity Trash Picking: One Man’s Trash, Another Man’s Treasure

money-trashCelebrity trash picking has gotten much negative press in recent years.  However, many people make a good side income from going where others fear to tread.

Celebrity trash picking refers to the practice of going through the garbage cans of celebrities looking for items that might be worth money to his or her fans.  It can also refer to the practice following celebrities in public places and picking up their discards, like coffee cups and empty lipstick tubes.

This practice, though perhaps considered unsavory by some, is perfectly legal in most places.  (Check local laws if you aren’t sure.)  Most locales state that items placed in trash cans or on the curb are considered discarded property.  Therefore, they are free for the taking (just don’t take the garbage can).
